According to the Drug Regulatory Authority, the relevant category of the antibiotic Co-amoxiclav was temporarily withdrawn from use after a person who was being treated in Ward 72 of the Colombo National Hospital died. (Sri Lanka Latest News)

Sources from the Drug Regulatory Authority confirm that 21,000 doses of this category of drugs have been produced in a pharmaceutical factory located in Horana, and 18,000 injections have been used.

The deceased was a 50-year-old man from Warakapola who was admitted to the hospital for treatment of cuts.

The National Drug Regulatory Authority says that this drug is a registered drug from 2019. The registration is valid until 2023.

However, the National Drug Regulatory Authority says that three deaths and acute allergic conditions were reported from Nikaveratiya Base Hospital, Ragama Teaching Hospital, Karavanella and Vathupitiwala hospitals, and Gampaha District Hospital.

After that, the risk assessment sub-committee has temporarily removed 03 drug categories that caused adverse reactions. It is also recommended to send the samples of those sub-sections to an approved laboratory of the World Health Organization to get a report.

Currently, based on the quality reports submitted by the Quality Assurance Research Laboratory, one of these units has been removed from use.

However, hospital sources say that yesterday’s death in the Colombo National Hospital was not caused by a group of antibiotics removed.
