Ms. Chanchala Gunawardena, the sister’s daughter of the late former minister Mangala Samaraweera, who was the most experienced, senior and philanthropic politician, joined the Samagi Jana Balawegaya to support the opposition leader Mr Sajith Premadasa for the upcoming presidential election. Sri Lanka Latest News

Chanchala Gunawardena can be named as the first person from his family to enter politics after the death of Mr Mangala Samaraweera and after she joined the Samagi Jana Balawega, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa appointed her to the post of Matara district organizer. She graduated from Clark University Massachusetts with a BA in English in 2011 and a MA in Professional Communication in 2012.

Former Minister Mangala Samaraweera entered politics from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in 1983 and served as the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications in Chandrika Bandaranaike’s government. In 2010, he left the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and joined the United National Party. At the time of his death, he had held many powerful ministerial positions such as finance, media, foreign affairs, etc., and performed many unique roles for the Samagi Jana Balawegaya. The demise of Mr. Sajith Premadasa, who worked together with the current opposition leader Mr. Sajith Premadasa to perform many exceptional services for the people of the country, can be described as a great loss to the Sri Lankan people and politics. Following his path, Mrs. Chanchala Gunawardena, his sister’s daughter, started her political journey together with the Samagi Jana Balawega.
