Mrs. Yamini Mishra, South Asia Regional Director of Amnesty International, says that she will meet with representatives of the International Monetary Fund and discuss the conditions on which the International Monetary Fund will provide a loan of US$ 2.9 billion to Sri Lanka.
Speaking to a Sri Lankan newspaper, Mishra said that while clarifying the position of the global human rights organization, his organization hopes to better understand the IMF agreement with the Sri Lankan government.
Amnesty International also says that its organization is concerned about the protection of human rights in countries that have received support from the International Monetary Fund during times of economic crisis.
Mishra also says that the International Monetary Fund is requested to give priority to the protection and promotion of human rights, including economic, social, civil and political rights, in its discussions with Sri Lanka.
She adds that whatever deal is negotiated, it must adhere to safeguards guaranteed under international human rights law.
