In a significant meeting held on December 8, 2023, Ambassador Mahinda Samarasinghe engaged in discussions with Scott Nathan, the CEO of the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC). During the meeting, Ambassador Samarasinghe expressed gratitude for the generous offer of nearly US$ 1 billion in financing for Sri Lanka.
The discussions revolved around potential future collaborations between the two entities, focusing on key areas such as refinancing commercial loans, environmental projects, economic initiatives, women’s empowerment, and food security.
Highlighting a recent investment milestone, the DFC injected US$ 553 million into the development of the West Container Terminal at the Colombo Port. This strategic investment, supported by the Adani Group and Sri Lanka’s prominent blue-chip company John Keells Holdings, not only adds a deep-water terminal to the Colombo Port but also promises to create substantial employment opportunities and income generation activities. With this flagship investment, Sri Lanka aims to send a strong message to the international business community — that the country is open for business and ready for impactful collaborations that contribute to economic growth and development
