Ambassador Mahinda Samarasinghe Praised for Key Role in Reducing U.S. Tariffs on Sri Lankan Exports

Finance Ministry Secretary Harshana Suriyapperuma has extended special thanks to Sri Lankan Ambassador to the United States, Mahinda Samarasinghe, for his significant contribution toward reducing U.S. tariffs imposed on Sri Lankan goods.

A large-scale social media campaign emerged on Friday afternoon, hailing Ambassador Samarasinghe as the unsung hero behind the initiative to lower the tariff rate introduced by the Trump administration—from 30% down to 20%.

According to reports circulating across social media platforms, Ambassador Samarasinghe played a key role in successfully steering these negotiations from the outset.

Despite being questioned on two prior occasions regarding this matter, Cabinet Spokesperson Nalinda Jayatissa and Trade Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe refrained from giving direct responses.

Nevertheless, the acknowledgment by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Deputy Minister of Finance Anil Jayantha—who publicly expressed their appreciation of Mahinda Samarasinghe’s efforts—marks a noteworthy development in this matter.
