The Ministry of Education has announced that all schools across the island will be closed on May 5 and 6, 2025, in view of the upcoming local government elections scheduled for May 6.

According to the statement, all schools will reopen on May 7, 2025.

Schools designated as polling stations must be handed over to the respective Grama Niladharis on May 4, 2025, to facilitate necessary preparations.

The Ministry further instructs all Zonal Education Directors and school principals to ensure that essential facilities—including tables, chairs, and halls—are made available for election-related activities.

Additionally, schools listed in Annexure 01 are to observe holidays only for the specific periods stated for each institution within the annex. Moreover, schools that have been requested for use after regular school hours are to be handed over for election duties following the conclusion of academic sessions on the relevant day.
