The COPE committee has been established to monitor the financial performance of government institutions, and by giving the chairmanship of the committee to a member representing the ruling party, it is not possible to achieve the objectives of establishing the COPE committee, the MP said while announcing his resignation.
During the 2015 – 2019 governance period, opposition MPs were appointed as chairpersons for both COP and COPA committees.
Pohottu Party Member of Parliament Mr. Rohitha Abeygunawardena was elected as the new chairman of the COPE Committee, and his appointment to the position was heavily criticized by the opposition.
Vijitha Herath had stated that by appointing Rohit Abeygunawardena as the Chairman of the Coop Committee, their expectations regarding Sri Lanka would be jeopardised.
