Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya has revealed that law enforcement authorities have identified 58 organized crime gangs operating within the country, along with approximately 1,400 of their associates.

Speaking at a special press conference at the Government Information Department, the Acting IGP disclosed that 17 shooting incidents have been reported so far this year, alongside five cases involving dismemberment. Investigations into all 17 shooting incidents and dismemberment cases are currently underway.

He further stated that certain members of the police and Tri-Services have been found to be directly or indirectly involved in some of these crimes. As a result, 11 officers have been arrested in connection with the incidents.

Additionally, Acting IGP Weerasuriya highlighted that since the current government took office, extensive operations have led to the seizure of a significant cache of firearms. Law enforcement authorities have confiscated 13 T-56 assault rifles, 15 revolvers, 21 pistols, 75 12-bore firearms, 7 repeaters, 805 shotguns, and four other firearms.

In a bid to further curb criminal activities, he announced that members of the public who provide credible information regarding criminals and illegal firearms will be rewarded.
