Acting IGP Praises Emergence of ‘New Culture’ in Sri Lanka, Highlights Fair Law Enforcement Post-Election

Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya announced that a “new culture” has emerged in Sri Lanka. He made this statement during the inauguration ceremony of a new building at the Chunnakam Police Station in Jaffna.

“The current government has directed me—and I have relayed to all officers—that the law must be applied equally to everyone. Typically, the post-election period has been marked by unrest, often referred to as the ‘post-election violence period.’

However, after the most recent presidential election, no such incidents were reported. This signifies the rise of a new culture in Sri Lanka,” he stated. “I believe this positive shift is the result of contributions from the community, the elected government, and the guidance provided to us, alongside the authority granted to the entire police force to enforce the law impartially.”

He added, “If we fail to uphold the law, it reflects a shortcoming within our institution and among its leaders. Today, we have a favorable environment to implement the law without interference.”
