The Samagi Jana Balawegaya and the Samagi Jana Alliance joined forces today in Colombo Fort, advocating for the annulment of civil rights for individuals responsible for the country’s economic collapse. They emphasized that these individuals should no longer enjoy state privileges and proposed compensation for the 220 lakh people affected by the financial crisis. The ‘People’s Voice for Justice’ initiative, led by Mr. Sajith Premadasa, the opposition leader, commenced this morning.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Sajith Premadasa revealed that three members of the Samagi Jana Balawegaye’s ‘Buddhi Mandapaya’ had recently undertaken a crucial case with a team of lawyers, including President’s Counsel Upul Jayasuriya from the Samagi Lawyers Group. Despite the challenges, they asserted their ability to identify those accountable for the country’s bankruptcy.

The Supreme Court delivered a significant ruling, attributing 1 out of 4 votes to the country’s bankruptcy due to irregular, ineffective, weak, and corrupt economic management. P. B. Jayasundara, Ajith Nivard Cabral, S. R. Atigala, W. D. Laxman, and two members of the Finance Board were held responsible for violating fundamental rights.

Notably, the Samagi Jana Balawega and the Samagi Jana Sanandhana, as a party and alliance disinterested in monetary gains, refrained from seeking compensation at this stage. The opposition leader stressed that the focus should be on rectifying the damage caused to 220 lakh people and business owners adversely affected by the misguided decisions of the corrupt group.

As part of their initiative, a special presidential commission will be established to compel the President to revoke the civil rights of those who violated the basic rights of 220 lakh people. Additionally, there will be an effort to reinstate voting rights that were previously revoked.

Mr. Sajith Premadasa disclosed that 220 lakh people demonstrated their support for this cause by signing the ‘Rajapaksawaru’ on the highway. The opposition leader emphasized the establishment of a system to obtain compensation for those affected by the country’s bankruptcy. Furthermore, he called for the recovery of embezzled funds, bringing the perpetrators to justice without resorting to political deals.
