Dr. Wijayadasa Rajapaksa, President’s Attorney, says the law will be strictly enforced against Sepal Amarasinghe.

The minister said this in response to a question from opposition members, including MP Wimal Weerawansa, about the statement made in an insulting manner to Sri Dalanda.

Mr. Wijayadasa Rajapaksa, Minister of Justice and President’s counsel, said.

“No one in this world has the right to insult ‘Sri Dalanda’, which is the pinnacle not only of Sri Lankans, but of the entire world’s Buddhist population. The Venerable Maha Sangha and we, the Buddhist people, have been very unhappy in recent days because, this Sepal Amarasinghe, insulted Sri Dalada in a very mean and shameful manner on social media.

According to the country’s constitution, he has the right to tell the world that he is insane. We are not opposed to it. We give him the right to believe that he is retarded. We will not obstruct that. It is a punishable offense under Penal Code Section 290. It is a ten-year prison sentence, and as a government, we are clearly stating that we will enforce the law against this person who is attempting to incite religious conflict in this country.”
