According to the Ministry of Buddhism, Religious and Cultural Affairs, 874 temples with old murals registered in the Department of Archeology of Sri Lanka will be videotaped and photographed and deposited in the Dambulla Mural Conservation and Research Center.
Here the inaugural program takes place at Kiribathgoda Sudarsanarama. It was headed by the minister in charge of the subject Mr. Vidura Wickramanayake.
According to the mural digitization program, a priority list of interventions for the preservation of the murals is being prepared.
The ministry states that this project is being launched with the aim of getting the necessary data for conservation work, enabling future generations to see these historical paintings as they are gradually deteriorating, and for the research activities of researchers and scholars.
Apart from depositing these documents at the Dambulla Dr. Roland Silva Center of the Central Cultural Fund, a digital copy is also to be given to the temple containing the murals.
