Information has now been revealed about a letter sent by the then Deputy Finance Minister to the Secretary of the Ministry of Finance to trap the masterminds of the VAT fraud 19 years ago.Sri Lanka Latest News

In the year 2004, Mr. Ranjith Siambalapitiya, who worked as a Deputy Finance Minister at that time, sent this secret letter to the then Finance Ministry Secretary Mr. Acharya PB Jayasundara.

As mentioned in the article, some information about the irregularities related to VAT refunds has been revealed in the local revenue department.

Below are the 5 main points mentioned in the article,

  • These unusual cash payments are being made in very large amounts with the knowledge of some of the most important officers in charge of that department,

-Information including check numbers and dates related to three institutions that paid the money is attached herewith.

-According to the informants, the institutions that received these unusual payments do not have a specific office, and a person comes to the office monthly to receive these checks, I came to know that these payments have started since the arrival of the current Assistant Commissioner of that department.

  • It is a piece of additional information that some of the main officers of this department are going to go abroad for permanent residence at the end of this year.

It is known that there are hundreds of files in this department in which such abnormal refunds are made, and the officials concerned never allow them to undergo an audit.
