According to the Department of Meteorology, the deep pressure depression associated with the Southwest Bay of Bengal was located in the vicinity of North Latitude 11.2° and East Longitude 82.7°, about 330 kilometres northeast of Jaffna, as of last night (02) December.
The department says that it will further develop into a cyclone in the next 12 hours.
The system is moving away from the island near the northern coast of Sri Lanka.
It is expected to move up the North Tamil Nadu coast of India by tomorrow (04), then move northwards and make landfall over the coast of South Andhra region by tomorrow (05), the Meteorological Department announced.
According to the statement issued by the Department of Meteorology, the sky will remain heavy with clouds in the Northern, North-Central and Eastern provinces.
Also, there will be occasional rain or thundershowers in the northern and north-central provinces and Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts.
Heavy rains of more than 75 mm may also occur at some places in those areas.
Sabaragamuwa province and Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts will experience several rainy seasons.
In Uva province and Ampara and Hambantota districts there may be scattered rain or thundershowers after around 01.00 pm.
It will rain in the morning in the Western Province and Galle and Matara districts.
According to the announcement issued by the Meteorological Department, strong winds of 40-50 kilometers per hour are expected in the North, North Central, North West and South provinces and Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts.
The Meteorological Department urges people to take necessary measures to reduce the risk of temporary gusty winds and lightning that may accompany thunderstorms.
