The Deputy Inspector General of Traffic Administration and Road Safety Mr. Indika Hapugoda has said that an incentive of Rs. 5000 is given to policemen who detect and arrest drunken driver.
As a pilot project, it will be done from this month to the end of the year in a period of 3 months (October, November and December), said the DIG. He also pointed out that this project was implemented according to the recommendations of the Inspector General of Police to prevent accidents caused by drunken persons.
He also pointed out that 180,000 related devices have already been given to police stations to detect drunk drivers.
He revealed that because of the special allowance given to the police officers, those officers will be more eager to arrest drunk drivers.
When drunk drivers are arrested, after it is confirmed that they are drunk, they will be brought to court and fined.
In 2022 alone, the number of drunk drivers arrested and brought to court is 25,038. Accordingly, approximately 70 drunken drivers have been arrested per day. The amount of fine collected from the drunk drivers is 622 million rupees.
