39 Dead and Thousands Affected as Severe Weather Continues Across Sri Lanka

The Disaster Management Center (DMC) reports that 39 deaths have been recorded so far as a result of the prevailing adverse weather conditions in the country.

According to the DMC, 79 Divisional Secretariat Divisions across 17 districts have been affected. A total of 4,008 individuals from 1,158 families are impacted in these areas, while 14 people remain missing.

Meanwhile, 10 individuals have been injured, and 131 people from 41 families have been temporarily relocated to five shelters. The DMC further noted that 472 people from 136 families are currently staying with relatives due to the disaster situation.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has directed the President’s Fund to provide Rs. 1 million for each person who lost their life due to sudden disasters, including floods and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall.

Accordingly, the President’s Fund has taken steps to expedite the distribution of financial assistance to the families of the deceased.
