A total of 22 suspected drug traffickers have been arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport with a stock of “Kush” and “Hash” drugs valued at more than Rs. 1.1 billion.

According to the airport correspondent, the suspects were taken into custody last night (25) during a raid carried out by officers of the Police Narcotics Bureau based on intelligence information received by the bureau.

Authorities stated that the luggage brought by the suspects had been packed with school supplies, various sweets, and fake bags. During the inspection, officers discovered more than 110 kilograms of “Kush” and “Hash” concealed inside.

It was further reported that each suspect was carrying over five kilograms of drugs in his luggage.

Investigators revealed that the suspects had departed for Thailand on the 22nd using airline tickets allegedly provided by a sponsor. While examining their mobile phones, officers reportedly found photos and videos showing them participating in various activities while posing as ordinary travellers.

The seized consignment is said to be the largest drug haul ever detected at Katunayake Airport. It is also the first reported instance of a group being arrested there while attempting to smuggle such a large quantity of narcotics.

Authorities further stated that the suspects are a group of young individuals residing in different parts of the island and are pursuing higher education at various institutions.

The suspects are scheduled to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court today for further investigations.
