The Minister of Transport and Highways Bandula Gunawardena says that the cabinet has been informed about this requirement, but no provision has been made so far, so a new request will be made from the ministry.
He mentions that the ministry requests the government to stop or reduce the allocations currently allocated to other ministries and provide those allocations to protect the existing road system.
As revealed by the Road Development Authority (RDA), a large number of projects and maintenance works on roads, including 12,000 km maintained by the authority, have stalled.
Among them is the $235 million Asian Development Bank project whose disbursement has been suspended.
The ministry said another 20 billion rupees is needed to maintain a 100,000 km road system and other national road networks.
