On Friday, the Japanese government confirmed that former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had been shot in Nara’s western region.
“Abe, the former Prime Minister, was shot around 11:30 a.m. in Nara.” One man, believed to be the shooter, has been apprehended.

Former Prime Minister Abe’s condition is currently unknown,” chief cabinet secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told reporters.
According to police sources, a man in his 40s was arrested for attempted murder and a gun was confiscated from him, according to NHK.

The former leader was giving a stump speech at an event ahead of Sunday’s upper house elections when the sound of gunshots was heard, according to NHK and the Kyodo news agencies.
