People’s Bank is celebrating Sri Lanka’s 78th Independence Day by continuing the tradition of the “Birth of Freedom” program for yet another year. Under this program, every baby born in the country during the two-week period from 1st February to 14th February will be given an Isuru Udana gift certificate worth Rs. 2000/-.
Expressing her views on this initiative, People’s Bank Deputy General Manager – Retail Banking and Overseas Customer Services Aruni Liyanagunawardana stated, “People’s Bank, which has been bringing banking and financial facilities closer to the citizens of this country for over sixty-four years, introduced Isuru Udana accounts for children up to the age of 5 in the year 1998. Additionally, strengthened by its financial stability of the bank and with the aim of instilling national pride while also encouraging parents to save for their children’s future, People’s Bank launched the ‘Birth of Freedom’ program in 2006.
Under this program, People’s Bank has taken the necessary steps to present an Isuru Udana certificate worth Rs. 2000/- as a gift to every baby born in any part of the country between 1st and 14th February. By presenting the documents confirming the birth of the child and this certificate to the nearest People’s Bank branch, an Isuru Udana account can be opened for the newborn. The key feature of this program is that in each case, People’s Bank staff will personally visit the hospital where the baby was born and present this certificate on behalf of the child.
The main events of “Birth of Freedom” program are scheduled to be held on the morning of 4th February under the patronage of the People’s Bank Chairman Prof. Narada Fernando and Chief Executive Officer/General Manager Clive Fonseka at the Castle Street Hospital for Women in Borella and the De Zoysa Maternity Hospital for Women in Borella. In addition, arrangements have been made to implement the Birth of Freedom program in several hospitals across the island.
