The Kandy District Investigation Officers of the Consumer Affairs Authority have secured a conviction against Kasagala Green Super (Pvt) Ltd, located on Hospital Road, Gampola, for selling local Nadu rice above the government-approved maximum retail price in violation of the Consumer Affairs Authority Act.
The case was filed before the Gampola Magistrate’s Court after Consumer Affairs Authority investigators conducted a raid on the supermarket on 23 June 2026. During the inspection, officers found that the supermarket was selling a kilogram of locally produced Nadu rice for Rs. 240, exceeding the government-controlled maximum retail price of Rs. 230.
When the case was taken up before the Gampola Magistrate’s Court on the 14th, the defendant company pleaded guilty to the charges. Accordingly, the court imposed a fine of Rs. 500,000 (Five Lakhs) on the company.
Consumers urged to remain vigilant
The Consumer Affairs Authority has urged the public to immediately report traders who sell food items above the prescribed control price, as well as products that are of substandard quality or have expired.
