“Even today, Sri Lanka does not have a Commissioner General of Prisons,” said attorney-at-law Dhanushka Perera, raising concerns over the continued vacancy in the key position.
Questioning the authorities over the crisis facing the country’s prison system, he asked:
“Are they trying to reduce overcrowding in prisons by killing people?”
His remarks come amid renewed scrutiny of prison administration following the deadly unrest at the Negombo Prison, where concerns have been raised over overcrowding, management failures and the lack of proper reforms within the prison system.
