Nepal’s Young PM Balendra Shah Sparks Controversy with Bold Anti-Corruption Crackdown
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

This remarkable individual was passionate about music long before he rose to the highest seat of power in his country. For many years, music was an inseparable part of his life. However, what makes his story truly extraordinary is that even after ascending to the “king’s chair,” he continued to sing—spending hours performing.

His music was far from ordinary. He was deeply connected to rap music, a genre that only gained global prominence in recent decades. In fact, rap had been part of his life for nearly 45 years. This raises a fascinating question: what kind of rap song did this man perform while seated in the highest office of his country?

His lyrics carried a powerful message:

“My beloved undivided Nepali, come to me. I am always with you. This is your country—my country, my friend. Together, we are writing a new chapter in our nation’s history. There is no place for corruption or fraud in our country’s future, my friend…”

This almost unbelievable story has recently emerged from Nepal, an Asian nation not far from us. It is, without doubt, a rare and striking development in global politics.

In Nepal, the so-called “royal chair” now refers to the highest executive position in government—the office of the Prime Minister. Although Nepal was ruled by a monarchy for centuries, that era came to an end in 2008 when the country transitioned into a democratic state. Since then, governments have been elected by the people.

However, Nepal has also experienced waves of youth-led protests against state governance in recent years. Against this backdrop, a new and dramatic political chapter has unfolded.

The man at the center of this story is Balendra Shah, widely known among the public as a rap artist. He rose to prominence as the leader of a powerful Gen Z youth movement that swept across Nepal in September 2025. This movement ultimately led to the سقوط of the ruling party and paved the way for a general election, through which a new government was formed.

Balendra Shah, the driving force behind this movement, secured a landslide victory in that election and became Nepal’s new Prime Minister. At just 35 years old, he is regarded as the youngest individual in the country’s history to hold this position.

Less than two weeks after assuming office, the rapper-turned-Prime Minister has already sparked widespread controversy across Nepal.

Just a day before taking his oath, he performed his own rap song titled “Jay Mahakaali,” capturing national attention. Now, he has begun implementing the promises he made during the 2025 people’s struggle and the subsequent election campaign.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah has launched a strong and decisive campaign against corruption within the country’s political system. Using the full authority of his office, he has initiated actions aimed at dismantling entrenched corruption, political nepotism, and elite dominance.

Several major developments have already been reported under this anti-corruption drive:

The arrest of former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, along with former Home Minister Ramesh Rao. They face serious allegations of authorizing 77 killings during the 2025 popular uprising. Both are currently in custody and will face prosecution. If found guilty, they could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.

Investigations have been launched against three other former Prime Ministers on charges of money laundering, with legal proceedings now underway.

Corruption and fraud cases involving several former cabinet ministers have been reopened. Investigations are also targeting key businessmen allegedly linked to these corrupt practices.

Disciplinary action has been taken against government officials accused of supporting anti-government activities.

This marks a significant turning point in Nepal’s political landscape. The young Prime Minister appears determined to deliver on his promises to the people.

Perhaps the most shocking development is that within just a week of taking office, Balendra Shah ordered the arrest of former Prime Minister Sharma Oli, who is now 76 years old. This unprecedented move has drawn global attention and stirred intense debate.

Political analysts suggest that Nepal’s young leader has initiated a strict and uncompromising campaign to reshape the country’s governance.
