The National Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases Programme reports that Sri Lanka records between 8,500 and 9,500 tuberculosis (TB) cases annually, with 45 percent of these cases coming from the Western Province.
Community Health Specialist Ms. Misaya Kader highlighted Modara, Mattakkuliya, Borella, Wanathamulla, and Grandpass as high-risk areas for TB transmission.
Of the 8,726 cases reported last year, 75 percent were pulmonary tuberculosis patients, and approximately 5,500 of these individuals were infectious.
These details were shared during a media briefing held at the Health Promotion Bureau in observance of World Tuberculosis Day on March 24.
