Professor Jiang Xueqin, the host of the popular YouTube channel Predictive History, has gone viral online after predicting that the United States could lose a war against Iran. The Chinese-Canadian educator made the remark during an online lecture in 2024, and the video has recently resurfaced as tensions between the United States and Iran continue to simmer.
In the lecture, Jiang made three major predictions in 2024. The first was that Donald Trump would return to power in the United States. His second prediction was that a Trump presidency would lead to a war with Iran. As both of these forecasts have appeared to come true, social media users have begun referring to him as “China’s Nostradamus.”
Who Is Jiang Xueqin?
Jiang teaches philosophy and history in Beijing. A graduate of Yale College, he has spent much of his career working on education reform and curriculum design in China.
Beyond the field of education, Jiang has built a significant online following through his YouTube project, Predictive History. In these lectures, he attempts to forecast global events by analysing recurring historical patterns, geopolitical incentives, and game theory.
His analytical approach is loosely inspired by the concept of “psychohistory,” a fictional science created by author Isaac Asimov in the Foundation novels. The idea suggests that long-term historical patterns can be used to anticipate future developments.
The Prediction That Sparked Debate
In a widely shared lecture recorded in May 2024, Jiang argued that if Trump returned to power, geopolitical pressures could push the United States toward a confrontation with Iran. According to his analysis, a second Trump presidency could significantly increase the likelihood of a military conflict with the Middle Eastern nation.
He warned that such a conflict could prove disastrous for the United States.
Drawing comparisons from history, Jiang likened a potential U.S. invasion of Iran to the Sicilian Expedition, when Athens launched a massive military campaign that ultimately ended in catastrophe.
He argued that Iran’s geography and population would make any prolonged occupation extremely difficult. The country’s mountainous terrain, extended supply lines, and strong domestic resistance could quickly turn an initial military success into a strategic failure.
What Jiang Told U.S. TV Show
Jiang recently appeared on “Breaking Points,” a news and opinion programme, where he expressed concern that such a scenario could unfold.
“Given my analysis of how the war is progressing, I think that Iran has many more advantages over the United States. The reality is, right now, it’s a war of attrition between the United States and Iran, and Iranians have been preparing 20 years for this conflict,” he said.
“They’ve had many practice runs. Last June was a 12-day war when the Iranians were able to examine and analyse the strike capacities of both the Israelis and the Americans. And they have had a lot of time, eight months, to prepare fully for this new attack,” Jiang added.
The educator also stated that Iran’s proxy groups — the Houthis, Hezbollah and Hamas — have studied American strategy and mentality and now possess what he described as a strong strategy “to weaken and ultimately destroy the American empire.”
A War That Could Change the World
In his latest lecture, Jiang suggested that the war could continue for a long time and that when it eventually ends, the world may no longer be the same.
Whether his broader predictions will ultimately prove accurate remains uncertain. However, for now, the professor’s once-obscure lecture has propelled him into global attention, making him one of the most widely discussed geopolitical forecasters on the internet.
