According to reliable sources, the powerful countries of the world have unofficially informed the government that they cannot provide international aid or loans to Sri Lanka until a government with an acceptable popular mandate is established.
The sources indicate that this notification was made unofficially during the negotiations with these countries regarding debt restructuring, which is a major condition of the International Monetary Fund.
In the relevant discussions, those powerful countries have unofficially informed the government that in order to support Sri Lanka, there must be an internationally acceptable government with a people’s mandate.
This was also emphasized by Mr. Peter Brewer, the head of the team in charge of Sri Lanka of the International Monetary Fund who visited Sri Lanka recently.
At the Sri Lankan press conference, Mr. Brewer publicly stated that in order to carry out the political and economic reforms proposed by the International Monetary Fund, there must be a government with a popular mandate.
Also, last Thursday, in a press release, Mr. Peter Brewer had informed that it is not possible to specify a date for the loan assistance given to Sri Lanka by the Financial Fund.
Mr. Peter Brewer had said this in a situation where Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe has announced that Sri Lanka is expected to receive the first financial aid from the International Monetary Fund by December.
