In a development that has sent ripples through Tamil Nadu’s political and film circles, Sangeetha Vijay, wife of actor-turned-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder Joseph Vijay Chandrasekar, has filed for divorce, alleging an extra-marital relationship and sustained mental cruelty.
Sangeetha has approached the jurisdictional family court in Chengalpattu district under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, stating that the marriage has “irretrievably broken down.” The petition is expected to come up for hearing on April 10.
In her plea, she has accused her husband of maintaining an open association with an actress, which she claims caused her emotional distress and embarrassment to their children within their social circles and on social media. While she has refrained from naming the actress at this stage to avoid further publicity, she has reserved the right to implead her as a second respondent if necessary.
The petitioner has further alleged “persistent mental cruelty, neglect and desertion,” stating that since 2021, the respondent had emotionally withdrawn, treated her with verbal disdain, and subjected her to what she describes as “constructive desertion,” compelling her to live separately within the matrimonial home.
Seeking to shield the family from further scrutiny, Sangeetha has requested the court to conduct the proceedings in camera. She has also urged the court to issue an interim injunction restraining social media platforms, YouTube channels, Facebook pages, and print and digital media outlets from publishing or hosting discussions related to the proceedings, arguing that continued publicity would lead to humiliation and mental agony for the family.
Despite maintaining silence in public to prevent scandal, the petitioner, through her counsel, exchanged multiple legal notices and correspondences between August 2024 and February 2025 in an effort to arrive at an amicable settlement, the plea states.
The case now moves to court, marking a dramatic personal and political chapter for one of Tamil cinema’s most prominent figures.
