Cyril Gamini has urged the public not to attempt to obstruct the investigations into the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks.
He made this statement while addressing a special media briefing convened today (26).
“This was a brutal attack that claimed the lives of 300 people. The majority were individuals who had gone to attend Easter Sunday Mass. Among the deceased were people belonging to every religion and every ethnicity. This was a massacre.
Uncovering the truth behind this attack is something that will show whether the law in this country is functioning properly. If not, it would send the message that some people are not afraid of the law — that one can commit a crime and remain hidden. That would only prove that there is no fear of committing crimes. We cannot accept that.
When we look at those making various statements and offering different interpretations regarding arrests, it becomes clear what agenda may lie behind them. Therefore, there is no need to politicize this matter. This is an independent investigation being carried out by the CID. It is best to allow these investigations to proceed independently.
Any attempt to sabotage these investigations is, in our view, an injustice to the victims who were killed and injured in this attack. Therefore, we urge everyone not to obstruct these investigations. They must move forward. We believe that these investigations will yield results.
Many people are talking about whether there was a political conspiracy behind this attack, and if so, who was responsible. We must definitely uncover why this attack happened. If anyone tries to hinder that process, we see it as a grave crime against the victims. So please allow these investigations to proceed and wait patiently.
