The Opposition Leader stated that, in accordance with the supreme law enshrined in the Constitution of Sri Lanka, Buddhism has been accorded a special place, and that the Constitution clearly provides for the protection, safeguarding, and preservation of Buddhism, while also ensuring specific protection and recognition for other religions and cultures. He emphasized that all citizens should consistently implement and advance programs that promote brotherhood and reconciliation, while safeguarding the country’s unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty.
He strongly condemned the President’s recent statement describing pilgrimages to religious shrines beyond the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi as incidents that incite hatred. The Opposition Leader stressed that people have a fundamental right to visit Buddhist religious shrines located across the country and that such visits are not motivated by hatred. He further noted that pilgrimages to sacred sites encourage people to travel to various parts of the country and that Buddhist religious places are visited without religious discrimination. Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa stated that he does not believe hatred emerges through religious activities, even when visiting Christian and Catholic shrines. He acknowledged that small extremist groups exist in every society but stressed that they have no place in Sri Lanka. He added that extremism has no place in a country where people follow the middle path in line with Buddhist teachings. He warned that statements which promote extremism should not be made and said it is incorrect to claim that religious activities are carried out with hatred, regardless of the region. According to him, such statements only serve to benefit extremist elements.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa made these remarks while issuing a special statement.
He further stated that the government led by the President must have a clear understanding of the Constitution and should refrain from making statements that contradict the special place and priority granted to Buddhism. At the same time, he said the government has a responsibility to protect other religions and cultures and to work actively to preserve unity and harmony, which, he emphasized, is essential for building a secure nation and ensuring national security.
The Opposition Leader also stated that issues which serve as root causes of division in the country should not be highlighted. He noted that people are taught from childhood by their parents to respect all religions and stressed that it is not possible to create or sustain social harmony by promoting religious hatred for political gain.
