The Sri Lanka Bar Association has issued a statement regarding an incident in which Kadawatha Mayor Ranjan Jayalal allegedly interfered with the duties of a female lawyer.
According to the statement, the Bar Association expressed deep concern over the mayor’s behavior towards the lawyer, who was present representing a legitimate legal organization, describing the conduct as highly inappropriate.
The statement further clarified that claims circulating on social media and reported in the media suggesting that the mayor acted as an unofficial magistrate are completely false and misleading. The mayor does not possess any magistrate or judicial authority.
Consequently, the Sri Lanka Bar Association strongly condemns the behavior of Kadawatha Mayor Ranjan Jayalal, considering it a serious interference with the professional responsibilities and independence of a lawyer, the statement added.
