Due to the rising water levels in the Kelani River basin, a severe flood situation has developed in Hanwella and the downstream areas, Sri Lanka Latest News reports.
According to the Irrigation Department, the water level at the Hanwella gauging station has reached 9.78 meters, nearing the threshold of a major flood. Director of Water Management L.S. Suriyabandara stated that the situation is a direct result of the increased water levels in the Kelani River basin.
He further noted that the gauge reading at Nagalagam Street stands at 8.35 feet, marking the highest water level recorded in recent history.
While assuring that no further rise in water levels is expected, Suriyabandara added that the flood dam near the Kelani Temple has now reached its maximum planned water level.
The Irrigation Department has urged residents living near the flood dam to stay alert to official announcements, as authorities will provide immediate updates should any risk arise.
