Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has urged the government to officially declare a state of emergency in Sri Lanka as the island continues to experience heavy rains and strong winds.

In a special video message, she said she is closely monitoring the emergency situation unfolding across the country.

While appreciating the efforts made by the current government to control the disaster, she emphasized that the situation has reached a point where international support is essential to manage the crisis.

“I believe that the government should declare this a state of emergency. And at this time, we should seek the support of international institutions. I do not think we can manage this alone,” the former President said.

She also noted that thousands of people have lost their homes and are without food. With road blockades disrupting public life, government operations, and businesses, she pointed out that seeking international assistance has become imperative.

Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga further expressed her condolences and sorrow to all those who have lost their lives and property in this disaster.
