A 4-member delegation from Central Institute of Coastal Engineering for Fishery (CICEF), a premier institution under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India, visited Sri Lanka from 08-12 September 2025. The visit focused on conduct of preliminary studies for the proposed development of the Point Pedro Fishery Harbour in the Northern Province.

The delegation called on the Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Hon. Ramalingam Chandrasekar and the Governor of Northern Province, Hon. Nagalingam Vethanayahan, and also held meetings with other senior officials including the Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, and the Chief Secretary of the Northern Province. The discussions centered on relevant modalities concerning the development of the Point Pedro Fisheries Harbour under financial assistance from the Government of India. The delegation carried out technical visits to the proposed project site at Point Pedro on 09 and 10 September 2025, accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources and local stakeholders.

This initiative follows the Memorandum of Understanding between India and Sri Lanka signed in March 2022 on cooperation in development of Fisheries Harbours in Sri Lanka, and highlights the growing India–Sri Lanka partnership in strengthening fisheries infrastructure, improving livelihoods of Sri Lankan fishermen and regional development.
