Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya has launched a special program, effective yesterday (14), to identify police officers who have accumulated assets beyond their known sources of income, as well as senior officers with close ties to drug traffickers operating in the underworld.
According to police headquarters, the program primarily targets high-ranking officers, ranging from Officers-in-Charge (OICs) to Senior Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs). Once identified, the details of these officers will be referred to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, with further inquiries to be conducted by the Illicit Assets Investigation Division of the commission’s Investigation Division.
Police sources indicate that there are numerous senior officers within the service who have amassed wealth far exceeding their official earnings, with some assets described as unimaginable. Several of these officers are already under investigation by the Bribery Commission, and it is reported that even some Senior DIGs are among those implicated.
It has also been revealed that certain officers who have accumulated excessive wealth own luxury properties, including hotels. Furthermore, investigations are currently underway into multiple senior police officers who became millionaires shortly after retiring from the service.
