The Seethawaka Pradeshiya Sabha has once again failed to elect a new chairman today (15), as the scheduled meeting ended without a conclusion.
The meeting was convened by Western Provincial Commissioner Sarangika Jayasundara for the purpose of appointing a new chairman. However, the session was disrupted when opposition members staged a protest against the decision to hold a secret ballot and subsequently walked out of the council chambers.
As a result of the lack of quorum caused by the walkout, the Local Government Commissioner adjourned the meeting indefinitely.
This is not the first time an attempt has been made to appoint a new chairman for the Pradeshiya Sabha. During a previous meeting, Commissioner Jayasundara asserted that the decision to conduct a secret or open ballot fell under her authority. She subsequently ruled in favor of a secret ballot, which again prompted opposition members to walk out in protest.
The continued failure to elect a chairman has left the council in a state of deadlock, with no immediate resolution in sight.
