SJB Warns MPs: Parliamentary Seats to Be Revoked for Defying Party Decisions on Local Government Power
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has announced its decision to revoke the parliamentary seats of any Member of Parliament who violates party directives regarding the formation of power in local government institutions, particularly in the event of a secret ballot based on the recent local government election results.

During recent internal discussions, the party leadership has informed all MPs elected under the SJB ticket that they are required to strictly adhere to the party’s decisions when determining power structures within local bodies.

The party has further emphasized that legal action will be pursued against any MP who fails to comply, with steps being taken to revoke their parliamentary membership.

According to the SJB, this directive is clearly supported by provisions in the Constitution. The party has pointed out that, in a previous Parliament, the positions of several MPs were revoked for acting against party decisions, serving as a precedent for this move.

It is also understood that this stance is not exclusive to the SJB. All other major political parties have now adopted a similar approach in maintaining discipline and unity within their ranks.
