The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather advisory warning of heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours. The alert was officially released at 9:00 a.m. today (May 18).
According to the Department, the warning applies to the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces, as well as the Galle, Matara, Nuwara Eliya, and Kandy districts. Residents in these areas are advised to remain vigilant.
The Department further stated that the southwest monsoon is gradually becoming established across the island, leading to a significant increase in rainfall in the southwestern regions today and over the coming days.
As a result, heavy showers exceeding 100 mm are expected in parts of the aforementioned provinces and districts.
In parallel, the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has issued landslide warnings for several areas due to the persistent heavy rainfall.
The NBRO has advised caution in the following Divisional Secretariat Divisions, where the risk of landslides has increased:
- Colombo District: Seethawaka
- Galle District: Elpitiya
- Kalutara District: Palindanuwara and Ingiriya
- Kandy District: Pasbage Korale
- Kegalle District: Bulathkohupitiya, Ruwanwella, Dehiowita, and Warakapola
- Ratnapura District: Eheliyagoda, Kiriella, and Kuruwita
The NBRO has confirmed that this warning will remain in effect from 10:00 a.m. today until 10:00 a.m. tomorrow (May 19).
