‘Inside Politics’ Prediction

Election prediction published two days before the Local government election in ‘inside politics’ column was that this election is a highly decisive one to the government and the opposition, and would be an extremely hard one for all political elements contesting to emerge victorious.

It was clearly stated that the government will have to face a serious problem in obtaining a majority in this year’s local government election. We also analyzed and presented the relevant reasons one by one in the ‘inside politics’ column last week.

‘ All are eagerly awaiting to see the outcome of the Local government election, which will be held on the 6th. Elections have taken a very competitive footing this time, and many political upheavals are expected after the results. Historically of LG elections have ended with the victory of the incumbent government. The only change that came was the 2018 elections, where the ‘good governance’ government lost their popularity it gained in 2015 and succumbed to ‘pohottuwa’, which was a ‘new entrant’ as a party in politics. This is exactly 3 three years after assuming power.

This LG election comes just 7 months after the ‘Malima government’s two political victories.

In such a situation, it usually happens that the ruling party is able to win a landslide victory in almost all local government institutions. However, due to the prevailing socio-economic environment that developed in the past 7 months, various arguments are put forward doubting the capability of the present Malaima government to record a landslide victory.

Many present as an argument that under the current situation, even if it wins a majority of 341 local government institutions this time, Malaima will only be able to win about 150 local government institutions.

Few others claim that the number will be limited to about 125. They point out that the main opposition, the SJB, has secured a certain amount of power on its own in the vast majority of the remaining local government institutions, thus, the opposition would jointly secure power in the majority of local government institutions.

Why?

Many reasons have been put forward as arguments. One is that the voters did not show much interest in this local government election compared to the last two national elections.

In the last presidential election and the general election, especially public servants were very enthusiastic about voting for the ‘Compass’. Public servants, regardless of age or gender, were engaged in campaigning for the ‘Compass’. But this time, such a thing has not been seen at all. According to official reports, 50% of public servants have not applied for postal voting this time.

Many voters have publicly said that they are abstaining from voting for any party this time, and argument raised the outcome of this election could be very decisive due to this.

On the other hand, it is no secret that foreign embassies in this country are also watching the outcome of this election with great attention. The reason for this is that they too are ready to take certain decisions and implement them after the election results this time. The International Monetary Fund is at the top of that.’

 ‘Inside Politics’- 2025.05.04

A referendum?

Two days before the election, former Minister Udaya Gammanpila also appeared on television and predicted the matter. Gammanpila said that the government would receive a significantly lower number of votes in this local government election than in the presidential election and the general election, and that the Compass would lose its ability to establish power alone in the majority of institutions.

When the results of the local government election were released last Wednesday, not only our prediction but also Gammanpila’s prediction was 100% confirmed.

Before the LG election campaign the government held to a two-thirds majority. Since the election was to be held within 6 months, many people thought that the President and government would record an unprecedented victory this time as well, as he had said before the presidential election.

In particular, JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya had publicly stated on several occasions that they would secure a voter turnout exceeding 70% this time.

Since this election held after the government had been in power for more than 6 months, this was considered in a way a referendum on the government. According to the final result, with nearly 2.3 million votes lost by the compass within 6 months, many people believe that this was a red light given to the government by the people. Many considered this as a serious collapse of the government.

This was reported by ‘inside Politics’ referring to JVP head office in Pelawatta heated discussions involving JVP heavy weights.

The last three weeks of the campaign government exerted a lot of energy in their campaign efforts. Going by numerous ground realities government got Presidents participation in campaigning efforts despite initially deciding not to do so.

‘Four Rooms’

Many anti government campaigns surfaced on social media during this LG election time. Many JVP leaders were enlightened during the past 5 months, the reduction of social media pro-government campaigns compared to the Presidential and Parliamentary elections, and a notable rise in the anti government campaigns. However, a lengthy discussion among JVP leaders led them to decide on the launch of a massive social media campaign similar to the one carried out by Basil Rajapaksa, who is considered the mastermind of the Pohottuwa party, at the Pohottuwa party office in Battaramulla during the last elections.

Fully equipped four rooms in the JVP headquarters in Pelawatta were set aside for this purpose. 120 highly skilled university undergraduates were assigned to launch a mass-scale social media propaganda effort. They were assigned to counter each and every anti-government social media posts with posts favouring the government and to enhance government’s image.

In addition to this, they were assigned to remove JVP leaders’ social media posts, which are popular these days and to launch a severe mudslinging campaign to the opposition leader Sajith Premadasa.

JVP targeted to increase their thus dropped loyalty based up to 50%. Pathetically even after 3 weeks of new campaign efforts village carders reported the popularity has not changed and percentage remain at 46%

Further to this JVP leaders entrusted their village campaigners to produce the voter trends in the villages on a weekly basis. This move was attributed the recorded 46% drop in village support to them which was reported by some other sources. With this the party hierarchy decided to get President involved in the campaigns and some other severe decisions pertaining to the election campaigning.

Politicized Tooth relic exposition

In their pursuit to increase the popularity up to 50% JVP leaders decided make use of the Tooth Relic Exposition scheduled to be held two weeks before the election. Accordingly, the JVP made many plans, including bringing elderly people to the sacred Exhibition by government sponsored buses from villages.

It is not that this had not been reported to the opposition. Accordingly, the opposition leader Sajith Premadasa had made a special statement in Parliament regarding this and said that the Tooth relic Exhibition should not be turned into a political events.

However, even after the opinion poll held at the village after the Tooth Exhibition, the JVP party members had reported to Pelawatte that the JVP vote percentage had not increased significantly throughout the exhibition period, and that it had only increased to 47%.

This was particularly, due to the serious weaknesses observed in organizing the Dalada Exhibition, the voter turnout at the village level was only deteriorating even further.

Against this backdrop, we are also ready to reveal another secret effort by the government surfaced that is attempted effort to extend the Dalada exhibition by few more days.

Proposal in this regard was presented to the responsible parties; those responsible had completely rejected this proposal, stating that it was not possible to extend the Dalada exhibition for even by an hour, given the serious situation that had already arisen in Kandy.

The last-minute attempt of the JVP to increase the voter loyalty through the Dalada exhibition was also failed.

From then on, it was seen that the election campaign of Malimawa had gone astray without a proper plan. Although the JVP had planned to bring the Sinhala Buddhist force together as that the Rajapaksas had kept in their pockets for many years to maintain their votes through the Dalada Vista, it could not be successfully achieved.

Many are raising doubts that the President visited Vietnam 3 days before the election with the aim of bringing this Sinhala Buddhist force under his spell. President’s Vietnam visit was to participate as the chief guest at the inauguration of the International Vesak Festival. While in Vietnam, the President also paid homage to world-famous Buddhist shrines, and photographs also published in the local media.

This was despite the fact that the Election Commission had issued recommendations prohibiting the publication of photographs of political party leaders during the quiet period when election campaigning was prohibited.

Who owns the jet?

President’s return to Sri Lanka erupted controversy. President used a Vietnam flight to go to Vietnam but his return was through an ultra-Luxury private Jet named ‘Embraer Legacy 600’.

This jet can accommodate 13 passengers it landed in Sri Lanka in time for the President to cast his vote in the LG election. The phoographs were released by the President’s Media division but none raised the question whose private jet president used to travel down to Sri Lanka form Vietnam.

However, when the parliamentary session began last Thursday, the first person to question it was SJB MP Harshana Rajakaruna. Harshana questioned who paid for the private jet the President used to travel to Sri Lanka, who provided it, was it provided by the Vietnamese government or by a company.

Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, immediately stood up to answer, said that it was provided by the Vietnamese Buddhist Association. However, Harshana immediately responded by saying that the government had initially announced that the relevant funds were provided by the Vietnamese government. However, Harsha  also stated that there was a contradiction in Vijitha Herath’s statement that the relevant funds were provided by the Vietnamese Buddhist Association.

Vijitha replied again, saying that the President attended two events during his visit to Vietnam, and that the two events were organized by two groups.

President to campaign

However, in accordance with the decisions taken in Pelawatte, the President took charge of the election campaign in the last few weeks and went from constituency to constituency, addressing huge campaign rallies like in the presidential election and the general election.

The JVP was also able to spend the necessary money for that. On May Day, the JVP brought people from all over the country to Colombo and spent a huge amount of money to hold a May Day rally with large party participation at the Galle Face grounds.

However, the opposition did not have the ability and financial strength to launch such a huge campaign. Especially after two defeats in two national elections and SJB, did not hold huge campaign rallies and instead held small public meetings by going from village to village and constituency to constituency.

In the last few weeks, SJB leader Sajith has been seen engaging in election campaign activities by holding small rallies covering all districts. Notably Sajith did not misuse any of the state property including the official vehicle that he officially owns. On the very day of the election campaign, Sajith handed over his official vehicle to Parliament and Sajith held 109 small rallies by going from constituency to constituency in a private vehicle obtained from a friend.

Although he did not do as much as Sajith, Namal also joined the Pohottuwa campaign and participated in several district-level rallies. Despite contesting for local government institutions in several districts, UNP leader Ranil was not seen attending any rallies. Instead, Ranil was seen discussing with party seniors from Colombo and giving advice.

Accordingly, although it was not explicit, this year’s local government election was completely turned into a battle between Anura and Sajith. While Anura launched a massive election campaign with the power of the media, Sajith was seen traveling around the country in a small scale with or without media support.

The North is getting rid of the ‘compass’

Election campaigns saw JVP exerting heavy efforts in North and East to secure the LG councils to them. They trusted the Tamil population who ensure their victory in the presidential election and in the general election would stand with them in this LG election as well. Going by this JVP had a specially designed election campaign to North and east. In this effort they released a special song targeting these two areas. The song depicted the intended development to the area. Similarly an unofficial song released targeting Jaffna which addresses Tamils and their burning problems. Tamil diaspora web site operating from London released this song to public. According to the web site the song addressed the Tamil grievances with promises that extended beyond JVPs policies with the aim of attracting Tamil votes.

Reason behind JVP placing a heavy focus on Tamil votes could be attributed the upcoming United Nations Human Rights session scheduled in September. Foreign and local media had reported the oncoming serious resolution on human rights violations which would be presented against Sri Lanka.

This effort of the government is to showcase to Geneva their loyalty and allegiances of Tamil people by recording a heavy victory in the Tamil populous regions. It is recalled after the crushing of the civil war in 2009 Mahinda too attempted to dilute the Human rights efforts against Sri Lanka by holding and winning intermittent elections called by him to show public opinion with him.

‘Compas’ government tried to emulate the same tack tick of Mahinda and failed with the heavy defeats suffered in Jaffna.

There are 17 local government institutions in the Jaffna electoral district, and the National People’s Power has not been able to obtain the majority of votes in any of the local government institutions.

Jaffna

The Ilangai Tamil Arasu Kachchi has won the Jaffna Municipal Council, Delft Pradeshiya Sabha, Velanai Pradeshiya Sabha, Valikamam West Pradeshiya Sabha, Valikamam North Pradeshiya Sabha, Valikamam South Pradeshiya Sabha, Valikamam East Pradeshiya Sabha, Vadamarachchi South Pradeshiya Sabha, Point Pedro Pradeshiya Sabha, Chavakachcheri Pradeshiya Sabha, Nallur Pradeshiya Sabha, Valikamam South Pradeshiya Sabha with a majority.

In the Jaffna district, the All Ceylon Tamil Congress had secured the majority of votes in the Valvettithurai Municipal Council, the Pedro Point Municipal Council, and the Chavakachchecheri Municipal Council, while the Karainagar Pradeshiya Sabha in the Jaffna district was won by an independent group and the Kayts Pradeshiya Sabha by the Eelam Democratic People’s Party with a majority of votes.

Kilinochchi

The Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi has won power in all three councils in the Kilinochchi district, namely the Karachi Pradeshiya Sabha, the Poonarin Pradeshiya Sabha, and the Pachchilipalai Pradeshiya Sabha.

Mullaitivu

There are four local government bodies in Mullaitivu district, and the Ilangai Tamil Arasu Kachchi won the majority of votes in all four local government bodies – Pudukudiyirippu Pradeshiya Sabha, Mudubadapattu Pradeshiya Sabha, Thunukkai Pradeshiya Sabha, and Manthai East Pradeshiya Sabha.

SriLankan to be sold

Meanwhile, last week, we reported that the International Monetary Fund is paying special attention to the results of the local government elections this year. We noted last week that the IMF’s special attention is also focused on the LG elections. With the government’s unfavourable performance in the LG elections, the IMF would exert pressure on the Sri Lankan government to fulfil the agreed conditions with them.

IMF has already suspended the fourth instalment demanding the increase of electricity tariff, oil and gas prices if to release the fourth instalment despite staff level agreement reached.

President also said before the election that a revision of the electricity bill would have to be made after the election.

However, it is reported that by now, in addition to increasing the electricity bill, the IMF has also presented another serious condition to the government. That is, the proposal that Sri Lankan Airlines should be privatised immediately.

Loss Makers

Several previous governments had tried to privatize the loss-making SriLankan Airlines, and as soon as the Malima government came to power, they said that they had taken steps to suspend the privatization of SriLankan Airlines. The government also said that it would consider it a national asset and turn it into a profitable institution.

It is also reported in the ‘inside politics’ column that the government has now taken a step back in the face of strong pressure from the IMF and has agreed to privatize SriLankan Airlines. Accordingly, it is also reported that an announcement in this regard is scheduled to be made by the government within the next few days.

Amid all these issues, another special incident that occurred on Election Day had attracted the attention of social media. That was the way Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya arrived at the polling station to cast her vote. She arrived that day dressed in denim pants and a shirt.

However, social media, posting photos from that time, launched a strong attack on the government, saying that it was unbecoming of a Prime Minister to come dressed in such a manner. In particular, they had launched a strong attack on Harini by posting photos of former Prime Ministers Sirimavo Bandaranaike and Chandrika Bandaranaike when they came to cast their votes during their tenure in office.

This is not the first time that Harini has been attacked like this. Previously, during an official visit to Thailand as Prime Minister, Harini was also criticized on social media for the dress she wore. But it seems that the Prime Minister has not learned a lesson from this incident.

The final results of all the campaigns were seen on Wednesday morning when all the election results were released. Within 05 months, the Compass had reduced its vote share by 2.3 million, reducing it from 62% to 43%. Compared to the general election, the SJB had managed to increase its vote share by 03 million. The Pohottuwa, which had dropped to 2.5%, had increased its vote share by another 06 million, increasing it to one million votes.

However, according to this result, there were 164 councils that were reported as directly capable of establishing power for the compass. There are 170 councils where the opposition has more power, and with the release of the election results, it was seen how the opposition had initiated discussions with other opposition parties to establish power in them.

A birthday party held at the house of a certain young political representative in Colombo, an unofficial agreement had emerged between Sajith and Namal regarding the establishment of power in the council after the election.

This column reported it last week. Accordingly, the SJB has already initiated discussions with other parties regarding the establishment of power in nearly 150 councils across the country, including the Colombo Municipal Council.

SJB conspirators

However, although the SJB gained more power under Sajith’s leadership in this election, many people point out that if Sajith had received proper support from within the party, the SJB could have achieved greater victory.

Especially when Sajith, as the party leader, went from village to village and gave strength to the party during the election campaign, there is a serious problem as to whether some of the party’s seniors gave their maximum energy to Sajith. In short, this vote was a vote that the SJB won solely because of Sajith. Apart from the support of a few seniors and young MPs of the party, Sajith did not receive any support from a group of conspirators who claim to be seniors within.

Than supporting the SJB and Sajith, they criticized Sajith in his absence. Declaring that Sajith cannot win the election, making fun of the way Sajith dresses, criticizing the way Sajith speaks. We have identified all these conspirators well, and we have more than enough evidence for that. We are also ready to reveal to the country about several of these SJB conspirators in a special article in the future.

While Sajith was traveling around the country targeting the election campaign, several of these SJB conspirators were planning a conspiracy to oust Sajith from the party leadership by staying in Colombo and saying that Sajith and the SJB would be disgraced after the election.

Whether this group was right or wrong, if they had not done so, the election campaign given by the JVP from the Pelawatte office and the SJB’s election campaign had been taken to the village, just as its MPs had been taken to the village, the SJB would be in a much greater position today.

The SJB now has a media unit that suits these conspirators. Although the media unit of a party should be engaged in the mission of uplifting the party leadership and the party, the SJB media unit is engaged in the mission of destroying Sajith and not protecting him by acting in the way desired by the three or four senior conspirators within the SJB.

That media unit does not call young, talented MPs for media conferences, but MPs who hold views opposed to Sajith. When a young MP simply comes to the Opposition Leader’s office, the media unit also poisons their heads. Although the names of these conspirators have not been revealed this time, we are ready to reveal their names to the country in a future ‘State Secrets’ column.

What Imtiaz did right?

As part of this conspiracy, the resignation of the SJB Chairman, Mr. Imtiaz Baqir Makar, while the election was round the corner also be pointed out as a part of this plan. No party chairman resigns at a time when an election has been announced in any country.

Even if there are problems, it is the least ethical thing for a chairman to do to suppress them until the election is over. However, Mr. Imtiaz Baqir Makar, who is considered a senior politician, ignored all of that and sent his resignation to Sajith during the election campaign.

Moreover, Imtiaz also took steps to release the resignation letter to the media. Many pointed out that it was a conspiracy to defeat Sajith and SJB in the election. Many people point out that someone like Imthiyas who did such a thing is not worthy of holding any position, let alone the position of party chairman. But Sajith tolerated all that and took steps to once again give the position of SJB chairman to Imtias.

The second conspiracy that took place during the election campaign was the targeting of three young political leaders who are currently rising within the SJB. Those three leaders are the opposition leader’s media spokesperson Prasad Siriwardena, Charith Abeysinghe and Waruna Deeptha Rajapaksa.

The biggest problem that the SJB had in the last presidential election and the general election was its inability to carry out a massive campaign through social media. The SJB media unit did not have any program for that, and there were no people who were knowledgeable about social media. Due to this, Malaima launched a major social media attack targeting the SJB and Sajith at that time, and the SJB was left stranded, unable to even respond to it.

But in this local government election, Prasad, Charith and Varuna completely turned the situation upside down. The three of them together not only carried out a massive campaign to boost the SJB through social media, but also worked to prove and show the country the lies of the opposing political groups.

In particular, these three were able to prove to the country in this short period of time that the government is doing a little and saying a little is ‘bad’. The result was that the government suffered a serious setback in the local government election and the SJB has started to raise its head. But now it is said that people who claim to be SJB seniors are raising a big protest against these three within the party. This shows that these senior SJB conspirators are not prepared to allow the rise of young leaders within the party.

It has been a long time since these senior conspirators of the SJB started the conspiracy to overthrow Sajith and the SJB. Since the last presidential election, these senior conspirators of the SJB have been in a conspiracy to defeat Sajith, overthrow Sajith and seize power in the party. After that, they were in a conspiracy to merge the SJB with the UNP.

During the last presidential election, when a large number of seniors of the Pohottuwa were preparing to join the SJB and support Sajith, these senior conspirators of the SJB launched a major operation against it within the party. When clean leaders came to support Sajith, they humiliated them by calling them corrupt. When they were given constituency organizers, some stomped their feet and protested.

Others publicly expressed their opinions against them when they came. After Sajith was defeated in the presidential election, these senior SJB conspirators tried to join forces with Ranil, who they themselves called a Central Bank thief, and link the SJB to the UNP.

A similar conspiracy was launched at the SJB May Day rally held 6 days before the local government elections. Normally, when an election is imminent, the party seniors should come together and hold the May Day rally in Colombo, but none of these seniors accepted the responsibility of holding the May Day rally in Colombo. While these senior conspirators were busy with this, the plantation leaders Digambaram and Radhakrishnan accepted the responsibility of holding the May Day rally in Talawakele.

On May 1, Sajith’s diary had a crowded agenda. Sajith was scheduled to attend the Premadasa memorial service in Keselwatte, Colombo that morning, and had also used a television talk show with social media operators and Derana Channel in the evening.

Due to this tight schedule , Sajith had arranged to charter a helicopter to go to Talawakele after the Premadasa memorial service in the morning. However, by the afternoon of that day, as there were signs of heavy rain, the pilot informed Sajith that he had to get back to Colombo soon; otherwise he would not be able to take off the helicopter. Therefore, as soon as Sajith got on the May Day stage, he informed the party general secretary and other seniors that he had to go to Colombo as soon as he finished his speech, and that the pilot had given some warning due to the bad weather conditions. Accordingly, as Sajith finished his speech and left the stage, the crowd also left with him, and citing this, the government and other groups launched a massive attack on Sajith and the SJB on social media.

But the surprisingly no senior SJB leader who knew exactly what had happened did not tell the country the truth. It is surprising that at least the SJB media unit did not issue a press release correcting this. Perhaps this happened because of the instructions given to the SJB media unit by the conspirators in the SJB. But this confirms that the senior SJB conspirators and even the SJB media unit were waiting for this incident to affect Sajith and the SJB.

But despite the SJB conspirators’ actions, only Radhakrishnan, who organized the May Day rally, explained the true situation to the country. He made a statement to the media and said that Sajith arrived on time, left on time, and the meeting ended as scheduled. Radhakrishnan said that the workers also dispersed happily. It is surprising that even though Radhakrishnan said so, the party has not said a word about it to this day.

Another conspiracy

Also, this time we are ready to reveal another plan of these conspirators through this column. Even when the local government elections were announced, these conspirators were waiting for Sajith and the SJB to be defeated in this election. By last week, they were thinking that this time the SJB would get fewer votes than in the last general election.

The ‘inside politics’ column has been informed without a word that several SJB seniors were engaged in telephone discussions and exchanged views on this. We have all the information about what they talked about, what WhatsApp messages were exchanged, and the times when they were made.

Under any circumstances, no matter what disadvantage occurs, we are ready to reveal all those names and information to the country in the future. There, they had planned to gather the SJB parliamentary group as soon as the SJB was defeated in the local government elections and inform Sajith to resign from the party leadership. Therefore, those conspirators did a lot of pulling Sajith by the legs during the election campaign.

Conspiracy rendezvous in Gampha

It was not that Sajith was unaware of this information. But since it was impossible to create problems within the party during an election campaign, Sajith took steps to face it alone and silently. He conducted the election campaign alone. In the same way, this group of conspirators also launched a conspiracy to prevent Sajith from being given the opposition leadership after the general election. They also prepared an article on this topic. We are ready to reveal all that information to the country in a separate article in the future.

In addition, how all these conspirators discussed together at the Gampaha house of a certain SJB MP immediately after the general election was over is also not a secret to this column. Several of those who participated in that discussion later joined Ranil and have now lost their way.

Also, even when Thalatha Athukorala, who was with Sajith for a while, left the SJB and went to Ranil and scolded Sajith in a very low manner, none of the senior members of the SJB came forward to defend Sajith. At least, they did not defend Sajith against Thalatha’s remarks.

Two opposed

When Thalatha attacked Sajith the other day, only two young MPS of the party spoke on Sajith’s behalf. They were Hesha Withanage and S.M. Marikkarya. Although the senior conspirators of the SJB thought that Sajith and the SJB would be destroyed in the local government elections, these young MPs knew fully well that Sajith and the SJB would emerge victorious in this election.

In addition, with the defeat in the last presidential election, several other senior conspirators of the SJB took steps to demand that Sajith step down from the party leadership and give the party leadership to Harsha. Kavinda Jayawardena, Hirunika Premachandra and Eranda Weliange were at the forefront of this. However, while they were demanding that Harsha be given the leadership, according to the results of the presidential election, Harsha’s Kotte seat SJB had fallen to third place.

Trump in another effort

Last week, World Bank President Ajay Banga visited Sri Lanka. It is noteworthy that the World Bank President visited Sri Lanka in the context of a warning issued by US President Donald Trump to the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. According to the sources we have, Trump has decided to stop the funds being provided to the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

The reasons for this are reported to be Trump’s need to remove the Chief Executive Officer of the IMF, Ms. Kristalina Georgieva, and the President of the World Bank, Mr. Ajay Banga, from their positions. It is said that both of them are close friends of former US President Joe Biden and work closely with him. But since the existing rules do not allow them to be removed from their positions at once, Trump has planned to stop US aid to the IMF and the World Bank and through that create a crisis and remove them from their positions.

However, we are reporting this information in the ‘inside politics’ column at this time because if such a situation arises, it could have a very negative impact on Sri Lanka.
