A high-level discussion between President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and officials of the Urban Development Authority (UDA) took place today (12) at the Presidential Secretariat. The meeting focused on identifying key priorities in the UDA’s development projects and ensuring the efficient utilization of funds allocated in this year’s budget.

President Dissanayake emphasized the significant role of systematic urban development in strengthening the national economy. He highlighted the necessity of formulating and implementing integrated urban plans that consider economic, social, environmental, and physical aspects.

One of the key topics discussed was the plan to introduce an online system for approving urban development plans. The President also stressed the importance of integrating relevant institutions to streamline this process.

To date, urban development plans have been prepared for 119 cities across the island. The meeting extensively reviewed the challenges encountered in their implementation and explored ways to expedite progress.

Additionally, the discussion covered the core responsibilities assigned to the UDA, including city planning, capital investments, implementation of government-approved development projects and schemes, formulation and enforcement of urban land-use policies, and initiating agreements for new development projects. Other areas reviewed included the takeover and completion of abandoned development projects, preparation of capital improvement programs, establishment of environmental standards, execution of environmental enhancement initiatives, building engineering operations, and the development of infrastructure facilities.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Urban Development, Construction, and Housing Anura Karunathilaka, Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, Senior Additional Secretary to the President Russell Aponsu, Chairman of the Urban Development Authority Eng. L.B. Kumudu Lal, and other senior officials of the UDA.
