The Matara Magistrate’s Court today issued an open warrant for the arrest of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon at the scene, following a request made by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The arrest order is linked to a shooting incident near a hotel in Weligama, Matara, where a Criminal Investigation Department officer was killed, and another officer sustained injuries.
Previously, on the 27th, the Matara Magistrate’s Court had ordered the arrest of eight police officers, including Tennakoon, in connection with the incident. The CID has since conducted searches at 10 locations in an attempt to locate him, while intelligence officers have been deployed to monitor 18 other sites.
Meanwhile, Mr. Tennakoon filed a writ petition yesterday seeking an interim injunction to halt his arrest. The petition is set to be taken up for consideration tomorrow, the 12th.
Against this backdrop, the Matara Chief Magistrate, upon a request from the CID, ordered the issuance of an open warrant for Mr. Tennakoon’s arrest.
