Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya disclosed that law enforcement had received prior intelligence indicating an attempt to assassinate organized crime leader Ganemulla Sanjeewa inside the Gampaha Court.
Speaking at a media briefing held yesterday (22), Acting IGP Weerasuriya confirmed that authorities had been alerted to the plot before the incident occurred.
He further explained that Ganemulla Sanjeewa had originally been scheduled to be presented before the Gampaha Court a week prior to the shooting at the Aluth Kade Court Complex. However, upon receiving intelligence regarding the assassination attempt, he took immediate action by informing the Gampaha Divisional Officers and the Magistrate. As a precautionary measure, it was decided to conduct the technical examination of evidence without producing Ganemulla Sanjeewa in court.
