The police have identified the individual responsible for opening fire inside the Aluthkade Court Complex earlier today.
A photograph capturing the shooter as he entered the court premises has now been released.
The shooting took place this morning (19) at the No. 5 Magistrate’s Court in the Aluthkade Court Complex, resulting in the death of Sanjeewa Kumara Samararatne, also known as “Ganemulla Sanjeewa,” a member of an organized crime gang.
Ganemulla Sanjeewa had previously been arrested on September 13, 2023, at Katunayake International Airport. He had arrived from Kathmandu, Nepal, using a forged passport and was apprehended by officers from the Immigration and Emigration Department.
According to Police Media Spokesperson Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Buddhika Manathunga, the shooting occurred when the suspect was being transported from Bussa Prison to the Aluthkade Court Complex for a court hearing this morning (19).
