Opposition Leaders Discuss 2025 Budget and Local Elections Ahead of Government’s Proposal to Parliament

The government is set to present the 2025 budget proposal to Parliament today. In response, all opposition party leaders and Members of Parliament (MPs) gathered for a special meeting under the leadership of Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa to discuss the budget and its implications.

During the meeting, discussions centered on the proposed budget as well as the upcoming local government elections. Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa emphasized the need to scrutinize whether the government has honored its election promises through this year’s budget. He also stressed the importance of ensuring that the government takes adequate steps to provide necessary relief to the public.

Several prominent opposition figures participated in the discussion, including Mano Ganesan, Rauff Hakeem, Shanakya Rasamanikyam, Gayantha Karunathilaka, Rohitha Abeygunawardena, Anuradha Jayaratne, S. Sridharan, G. G. Ponnambalam, Dayasiri Jayasekara, Ranjith Madduma Bandara, V. Radhakrishnan, P. Sathyalingam, J.C. Alawathuwala, Chamara Sampath Dassanayake, Ravi Karunanayake, D. V. Chanaka, and Ismail Mohamed.

This high-level discussion underscores the opposition’s commitment to holding the government accountable while addressing the concerns of the people ahead of the crucial budget announcement.
