Doctors Warn About Toxic Chemicals in Pencils: A Hidden Risk to Children’s Health
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Medical experts caution that many pencils available on the market contain harmful chemicals that pose significant risks to children’s health. They warn that children who habitually chew on pencils are at risk of developing long-term diseases due to exposure to these toxic substances.

A large number of these pencils, often imported in vibrant colors, are specifically designed to appeal to children. Their colorful and attractive designs make them more enticing, leading to higher demand among young users.

To achieve these eye-catching appearances, manufacturers often use coatings that contain harmful chemicals such as mercury, arsenic, cadmium, and other heavy metals. According to doctors, these toxic substances can unknowingly enter a child’s body during common activities like writing, sharpening pencils, or chewing on them.

While there is an international standard for pencil and colored pencil manufacturing, known as the EN71-3 certification, which ensures protection against 19 types of heavy metals, many pencils currently available in the market fail to meet this standard.

This alarming issue highlights the urgent need for regulatory enforcement and public awareness to protect children’s health from the dangers of toxic chemicals in everyday school supplies.
