On January 8, Minister of Mass Media and Health, Nalinda Jayatissa, assured that the new government would take decisive action to resume judicial proceedings, a key demand from media organizations such as the Free Media Movement. The Minister acknowledged that the process of delivering justice for past crimes against journalists and media institutions has been hindered, resulting in slow and ineffective outcomes.
The Minister made these remarks during a discussion with the Free Media Movement at the House Leader’s Office in Parliament on January 8, coinciding with the 16th anniversary of the tragic murder of journalist Lasantha Wickramatunga.
The Free Media Movement presented six fundamental points during the discussion, emphasizing the need for independent and comprehensive reforms within Sri Lanka’s media sector. Among the key demands, the Free Media Movement called on the government to identify the obstacles preventing justice for journalists and their families, pledging support for these efforts.
Additionally, the Free Media Movement advocated for an inclusive, participatory dialogue to review and address laws that impact freedom of expression. This includes concerns over the Online Security Act, the Anti-Terrorism Bill, and the Electronic Broadcasting Regulatory Commission Bill, as well as preventing the misuse of laws like the ICCPR. Minister Jayatissa expressed the government’s openness to considering alternative proposals, noting that there is room for discussions on creating independent structures rather than dismantling existing ones, such as the Press Council, which has faced criticism from media organizations.
The discussion also centered on establishing a government-supported training program to enhance media quality and protect journalists’ professional rights. The Minister committed to consulting media organizations and other stakeholders before making final decisions on issues such as the formation of the Chartered Institute of Journalists and the development of a National Media Policy.
The meeting also saw the participation of Mr. Kelum Wijenayake, Additional Secretary (Development, Planning and Information) of the Ministry of Mass Media, and Mr. Harsha Bandara, Director General of Government Information, along with other officials.
