Today marks sixteen years since the brutal murder of journalist Lasantha Wickramatunga, who was assassinated on January 8, 2009.
Despite the passage of over a decade and a half, those responsible for this heinous crime remain unpunished. The delay in justice is widely attributed to a lack of political will and interest from successive administrations.
However, there is renewed hope among those close to Wickramatunga that justice may finally be served under the leadership of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Lal Wickramatunga, a brother of the slain journalist, expressed optimism in a piece published on the Colombo Telegraph. He commended the government’s decision to reassign seasoned investigators Shani Abeysekara and Ravi Seneviratne to the case, a move he believes could pave the way for uncovering the truth and holding the perpetrators accountable.
The quest for justice continues, as those who knew and admired Lasantha Wickramatunga remain steadfast in their hope for closure.
