Once a Speaker’s resignation is formally submitted and accepted by the President, it attains constitutional validity, clearing the way for the election of a new Speaker, according to the latest updates from Sri Lanka.
Deputy Secretary General of Parliament Chaminda Kularatne stated that, under Standing Order 6/1, once the resignation is officially notified to the Secretary General of Parliament, the process to appoint a new Speaker will proceed during the next parliamentary session.
The Standing Orders of Parliament mandate that when a vacancy arises in the office of Speaker, Parliament must elect a replacement at its first sitting after the vacancy occurs.
Parliament is scheduled to convene on December 17 and 18, during which the election of a new Speaker is expected to take place.
