The leader of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and Opposition Leader, Sajith Premadasa, criticized the current government, alleging that it is following the policies of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe by advancing the IMF agreement he had initiated. Speaking to the media in Colombo, Premadasa claimed that the government has disregarded the mandate given by the people and is instead prioritizing IMF directives, a move that has failed to uplift the nation.
“Dancing to the Tune of the IMF”
Dr. Harsha de Silva and the SJB have stated that while they are willing to work within the IMF framework, they expect the government to fulfill its promises, including providing relief to the people. Premadasa noted that the current administration had pledged to revise the tax formula from the current 6%-36% structure to a more manageable 1%-24% range. However, he accused the government of blindly adhering to IMF policies without implementing measures that genuinely benefit the populace.
Broken Election Promises
Premadasa further criticized the government for failing to deliver on its election promises. He pointed out that commitments to reduce electricity bills and lower oil prices remain unfulfilled despite the possibility of significant reductions. These unmet promises, he said, reflect a pattern of false assurances made during the election campaign, leaving citizens disillusioned.
“We Cannot Stay Silent”
The opposition leader emphasized that his criticism is not intended to undermine the government but to highlight its shortcomings for the benefit of the people. Premadasa underscored the importance of fulfilling the mandate entrusted to the government, accusing it of losing touch with the electorate and becoming ineffective in addressing the nation’s pressing issues.
Call for a New Budget
Premadasa called for the introduction of a new budget, stating that the absence of such an initiative raises doubts about the government’s future plans. He urged the administration to outline clear policies and prepare for provincial elections, criticizing its failure to implement promised reforms.
Future Decisions on National List
Addressing the future direction of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, Premadasa said the party’s plans would be discussed at the district level, and decisions regarding the national list would be taken in alignment with the party’s objectives. He emphasized that these decisions would reflect the party’s interests rather than external influences.
Premadasa’s remarks underline the growing frustration among opposition leaders and the public regarding the government’s perceived inability to honor its commitments and implement policies that address the country’s economic and social challenges.
