The treasure-hunting activities conducted by state authorities in the Wandurawa area of Veyangoda, which had sparked widespread public attention and unrest over the past few days, were brought to a halt this afternoon (23).

According to our correspondent, several blocks of varying sizes, excavated from the site believed to contain treasure, were broken into smaller fragments using a drilling machine. However, no discoveries were made within the fragments.

Following the removal of the rock debris, the site was scanned by the Special Task Force using advanced equipment. Despite these efforts, no signals indicating the presence of any artifacts or treasure were detected.

This location has reportedly been subjected to around 10 separate treasure-hunting attempts by various groups. Due to concerns over potential damage to the Central Expressway currently under construction, this particular operation was conducted publicly for the first time in Sri Lanka, under the direct supervision of state authorities and based on an order issued by the Attanagalla Magistrate’s Court.

The excavation was carried out under the oversight of the Department of Archaeology, the Geological and Mines Survey Bureau, the Government Analyst’s Department, the Road Development Authority, the Sri Lanka Police, the Police Special Task Force, and officers from the Mirigama Divisional Secretariat.
