A driver employed by a private company responsible for depositing money into bank ATMs and collecting deposits from customers absconded with Rs. 75 million yesterday (18), while en route to deposit funds in banks.
According to police reports, the driver, assigned to the company’s Seeduwa branch, managed to evade security personnel and flee with the cash. The incident occurred during a routine operation to deposit money into three bank ATMs in Seeduwa and collect deposits from machines at a bank in Minuwangoda.
Gampaha Divisional Police Chief, Senior Superintendent of Police Jagath Rohana, stated that the theft happened as the security guards were carrying the cash tray towards an ATM in Minuwangoda. Exploiting the moment, the driver escaped with the money.
The heist took place yesterday morning. Following a search operation, the vehicle used in the escape was found abandoned in the Galboda area of Gampaha, Police Media Spokesperson DIG Nihal Thalduwa confirmed.
The Police Media Division released a photograph of the suspect last night and urged the public to provide information. Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspect, a resident of Katana, had worked at the company for about two years and had gained the trust of his colleagues.
The Gampaha Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau is leading the inquiry into the theft.
